The “Stream Protection Rule” focuses on preventing coal miners from contaminating rivers nearby their mountaintop top removal sites. This law was put into play by Barack Obama, but recently President Trump signed to remove this law. The thought behind this was that job opportunities would be increased in the mining industry.
Water contaminations would highly increase even to countries not near the mining sites. Nearly 2 billion people worldwide drink unsafe water. Diseases like diarrhea, dysentery and cholera kill 1,000 children every day caused by dirty water. 40 percent of American rivers and 46 percent of lakes are too polluted for fishing, swimming or aquatic life. Already 1.2 trillion gallons of untreated sewage, storm water and industrial waste are discharged into US waters annually. Mountain top removal coal mining contributes to significantly higher rates of birth defects, cancer, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases among individuals living in the region where it occurs. Toxic dust from mountaintop removal promotes the growth of lung cancer in people living nearby.
